Sixteen

“There’s more where this came from, dears,” Justice’s mom said as she filled our fridge with an overabundance of baked goods.

Her name was Constance, and I had a hard time imagining Justice coming from this woman. With her beautiful golden hair and her sad but kind eyes, my brain just sort of went nope.

After giving Leo, Rafe, and me a quick squeeze, she was out the door in a flurry of skirts, mumbling something about no rest for the wicked and having an entire town to feed. I’d literally heard people calling her the realm-mother before this, and I had to admit, the title fit.

The moment the door closed behind her, I turned to Rafe. “You’re blowing this way out of proportion.”

He was in a mood. Or… maybe it was me.

A half-consumed amber bottle was in front of him while he kept his palms pressed to the countertop. I recognized it as one of his regular power moves. If it were anyone else, I might have been intimidated. But I could still remember what those hands felt like when they were holding me tight, trying to keep the world at bay. Rafe didn’t scare me now and I wasn’t sure he ever did before.

“You need around-the-clock security,” he growled. “I want someone with you at all times.”

“Am I even allowed to pee, Rafe? In case you’re wondering, this was why I didn’t tell you,” I said, swiping an apple from the recently filled basket and plopping myself down on the couch in my living room… our living room?

I wasn’t actually sure where Rafe was sleeping—if he was sleeping. But he always seemed to be here. This house had become our home base of sorts.

“Things are worse than I thought,” Leo said, coming to stand behind me and placing his hands on the back rest.

Rafe had barely let Leo and I get cleaned up from our ordeal before putting all of our metaphorical dirty laundry on the table for discussion, but at least I wasn’t literally coated in pit filth any longer.

I shuddered as that simple thought conjured images of the pale-eyed beast. Rafe noticed my reaction but said nothing. Thank the stars. Did Leo have waking nightmares too?

Leo was almost unrecognizable without the beard. Honestly, it made my heart hurt seeing him like this. With his hair pulled back into a bun, he was like a frailer version of Soren. He was just missing that stupid mustache that I had loved to hate. Now, I would give anything to see once again.

“I’ll do it,” Justice said, appearing through the front entrance.

Wonderful. This discussion was now a full-blown family affair.

“Do what?” I asked.

“I’ll be her guard.”

“How does that work?” My gaze swiveled to meet him as he pulled the door closed behind him. “You turn your back and let them actually murder me next time?”

Speaking of carbon copies, Justice got a heavy dose of the Morgan genes too. He had his mother’s green eyes, but it was like he and Rafe were painted from the same palette.
